Power; Shadow Control
Personality; On the surface, Vanitas' personality is very shallow. He's villainous, there's no doubting that. He's also manipulative, selfish and not the most trustworthy, even towards allies. It's difficult, if not nearly impossible for him to really care about another human being, and that's because:
Once upon a time, Vanitas and Ventus were the same person. This is important, because many of their aspects are opposite of each other, and that's because Vanitas is Ventus' darkness given human form. Ventus values friendship and family, while Vanitas is a loner who pushes away any kind of contact with others, even going so far as to make sure he has a wide personal space as buffer. Though their past leading up to being taken in by Xehanort is unknown, it's safe to assume that it wasn't a happy one. Ventus had the opportunity to start anew with his amnesia, but Vanitas, it's assumed, did remember a good portion of it, and chose to accept his fate to forge a powerful weapon. That weapon was the X-Blade, which he pursued with neigh unbreakable lust. Also as a by-product of their split, he was able to create monsters called the Unversed.
In some ways, Vanitas is every bit the teenager he appears to be. He gets frustrated, and will throw a kind of temper tantrum when things don't turn out like he'd want. The best example of this is when he tested Ventus' progress for the first time, and Ventus failed to meet his expectations. Fully knowing that he'd be flushing all his plans down the drain, he then attempted to kill his other half. Luckily, he didn't succeed, but it still shows a lot of hot-headedness and devil-may-care attitude on his end. He's also rude and cocky, often using blunt, even slangy language and insults like 'idiot'. And he loves to goad anyone who catches his interest, such as when he antagonized Aqua simply for being Ventus' friend and a powerful opponent.
But, in other ways he shows a surprising amount of intelligence and cunning. He uses pawns, like when he warned Ventus that Terra was setting out to never return, knowing that the blond would follow after him. It allowed Ventus to fight and become stronger, while at the same time strengthening Vanitas since the Unversed returned to his body after their defeat, and gifted him their experience. He's also not above attacking people unannounced, as when he surprised Mickey and used him as bait to again lure Ventus where he wanted him.
It's unknown how far Vanitas was willing to play along with Master Xehanort's plans after completing the X-Blade, because the canon's vague about Vanitas' intentions. But in the end, Vanitas did forge the X-Blade he wanted, but at the cost of his life. His body was destroyed, and after a long and grueling battle within Ventus' mind, his spirit died, also. But, if the past is any indicator, Vanitas is anything if not stubborn, and an opportunist. Given the chance, he will embrace any power offered to him, learn it, and master it as quickly as possible.
